University City Magazine features Nona's Sweets: Nona's Sweets Offers A Taste Of The Past

Nona’s Sweets is bringing its specialty cakes, cookies, desserts and candy to North Tryon Street.
The bakery expects to open this week in the former Hollywood Video location at the J.W. Clay Boulevard entrance to University Place.
The new location will give the Italian bakery more room to display treats, offer classes and cake-decorating parties, and showcase its popular cupcake bar, where customers get to dress up "naked" cupcakes with their choice of frostings and toppings.
"It’s listening to our customers and offering what they are asking for," explained co-owner Dominica Clementi.
Clementi operates Nona’s Sweets with her mother and father, Jo-Ann and Nick Morlando. They opened the bakery in 2004 at the nearby Terraces at University Place shopping center.
Nona means grandmother in Italian, and the bakery’s extensive offerings include several family recipes.
The bakery website displays scores of treats such as Italian Ricotta Cheesecake, Cannoli, Tiramisu and Double Chocolate Brownies. Many items are available daily at the bakery; all items can be ordered ahead of time; a few items also can be shipped.
Offerings at the bakery change with the season.
"We’re doing a lot of things for Thanksgiving," Clementi said, "like pumpkin scones, pumpkin turnovers, pumpkin cream horns and a great apple harvest cake that people enjoy." In December the bakery will offer items such as orange cranberry cake and peppermint crunch loaf cake.
The new location will allow Nona’s Sweets to expand its product line to include donuts and bread. "Our new pastry chef does bread very, very well," Clementi said.
There also will be room for people to eat their treats and sip coffee and cold beverages.
Moving to the North Tryon Street location will also improve the bakery’s visibility – to traffic on North Tryon Street now and to light-rail passengers in the future. One of the planned stations for the line between uptown and UNC Charlotte will go in front of the bakery.
The new location "is perfection," Clementi said, and even though some customers from other parts of Charlotte have tried to get them to relocate, she and her parents knew that Nona’s Sweets belongs here.
"Everywhere we go there is a need for us, but we really felt University City is the heart of all these other communities," she said. "We knew University City is where we wanted to be."
