Univ City Mag Featured Story - Bakers On A Mission - Mother-Daughter cancer survivors work to raise money and awareness - for a cause

Hanna Miller of University City Magazine writes the following article about Nona's Sweets owners/cancer survivors...As two Charlotte women embellish hundreds of cookies with pink ribbons this October, they’ll also be stirring in heartfelt wishes for women everywhere.
Dominica Clementi and her mother, Jo-Ann Morlando, owners of Nona’s Sweets in University City, hope the cookies iced with the breast-cancer support emblem will increase women’s awareness.
If it starts one person thinking “‘It’s October, I’ve got to go get a mammogram,’” says Clementi, “it’s good.”
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and Clementi and Morlando know well the importance of early detection practices.Morlando has survived three bouts with malignancies, all treated by surgery. She’s hadovarian, colon and squamous-cell skin cancer. The first struck when she was still in her 20s, and the last some fi ve years ago.
In September of last year, Clementi and her mother both were jolted when a hysterectomy revealed that Clementi was suff ering from a rare type of lymphoma. “One in a bajillion people get lymphoma in their cervix,” Clementi says. She underwent three months of chemotherapy.
